BLACKSMITHING

Welcome to my blacksmithing pages. In these pages you'll I've combined a gallery and how-to on some of the projects I've completed so far. I'm still a greenhorn, but I've been very lucky in getting good information and resources.

I'll try to make my instructions easy to scan, but also as specific as possible. Where appropriate, I'll include pictures that illustrate the steps. Here's an example of format I might use for an instruction page:

The humble beginings...

This is what i started my journey into red hot metal with, as you can see these are some pretty basic tools, save for the anvil which I was blessed with a good deal on CRAIGSLIST http://www.craigslist.com ,these are tools that one would likely have about the house or are reasonably easy to obtain

This is the equipment I started my smithy with

Don't worry if you cant find anvil, all you need is a reasonably flat chunk of metalheavy and tough enough to withstand beating on it with a hammer(eg: railroad track, steel plate, machinery pieces) or even a shop vice.

my first "forge"

The picture on the left is my first "forge", it is simply a pencil flame propane torch, although it didnt have quite enoughheat to do the job well, so thats when I remembered the weed burner out in the shed and how hot it got so there I had a enough heat to complete my first project.

After spending WAY too long on my first screwdriver and having to move the 172 pound anvil and trying to juggle a 500,000btu torch, 1500 plus degree metal and a 3lb hammer I decided I need a change and after much research thank you to http://www.iforgeiron.com I landed on this setup.

And this is the smithy today....

The future plans include putting a roof over the whole operation so I can work when its raining(which seems to only occur on days that Im off work and want to hammer some metal), a post vice, some racks of some sort for stock storage, and some other misc storage, as well as adding to my hand/anvil tools
